FAQs
Why Are My Day and Night Blinds Uneven or Crooked
Day and night blinds go uneven for a handful of predictable reasons, wonky brackets, fabric that’s rolled unevenly, or a bottom rail that’s been knocked out of alignment.
Most of these are fixable in 20 minutes without calling anyone out.
Work through the steps below and you’ll find the culprit.
What You’ll Need
Tools
- Spirit level
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Phillips screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Pencil
Materials / Replacement Parts
- Replacement bracket (if cracked or warped)
- Replacement bottom rail weights or rail inserts (if bent)
- Cleaning cloth (dry)
How to Fix It: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Check the Brackets Are Level
This is the most common cause and the easiest to miss. If one bracket sits even a few millimetres higher than the other, the whole blind will hang at an angle.
- Take the blind down and set it aside
- Hold a spirit level across both bracket positions on the wall or ceiling
- If they’re off, loosen the screws, reposition, and re-fix at the correct height
- Re-hang the blind and check whether it sits square before going any further
Step 2: Inspect the Headrail and Cassette
A warped or damaged headrail won’t hold the blind straight, no matter how many times you adjust it. Physical damage here usually means a replacement part is needed.
- Look along the length of the headrail with one eye closed, like you’re lining up a shot
- Any visible bow or curve means the headrail needs replacing
- Check the end caps are fully clipped in on both sides
- Remove any grit or debris from inside the cassette with a dry cloth, small particles can cause the fabric to bunch unevenly on one side
Step 3: Reroll the Fabric
If the blinds looks uneven only when partially open or closed, the fabric has likely wound unevenly onto the roller. This happens when the blind is yanked down quickly at an angle, or after long periods without use.
- Lower the blind fully, then remove it from the brackets
- Gently unroll the fabric completely by hand, keeping even tension on both sides
- Reroll it slowly and evenly, making sure neither edge pulls ahead of the other
- Re-hang and test it at several positions, fully open, halfway, fully closed
Step 4: Check and Straighten the Bottom Rail
The bottom rail on a day and night blind is weighted, but it can bend slightly if the blind has been pulled at an angle repeatedly. A bent rail sits crooked even when everything else is fine.
- Remove the bottom rail by locating the end caps and sliding the rail out (most designs allow this without tools)
- Lay it on a flat surface and check if it’s straight
- If it’s only slightly bent, gentle pressure along the length can correct it
- If it’s cracked or badly bent, order a replacement rail before re-fitting
